Tether iPhone to laptop
Tether iPhone to laptop so you can share your iPhone’s internet connection.
Tether iPhone to laptop (1st step) :
At first what you need to do is to “upgrade” your data plan with AT&T (American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation) to allow tethering.
What is data plan?
A data plan is a service (offered by mobile carriers) that allows users to access the internet via a 3G, 4G, or LTE networks. Data plans can come in a variety of costs and sizes depending on the mobile carrier, and some even allow for unlimited data consumption.
Process of updating
The process of updating your data plan with at&t depends on where you live. The procedure differs in every country.
For that process you have to google “how to use at&t in (country name)”
Now if you have the unlimited data plan with AT&T and you change it to allow tethering you will not be able to go back to your unlimited data plan (just as a bit of warning). Once you have your data plan, change to allow tethering.
Tether iPhone to laptop (2nd step):
Now you need to download the latest version of iTunes to the laptop that you want to tether. (Currently that’s version 9.2)
Learn how to get the latest version of iTunes on your Mac or PC.
If you have iTunes installed on your computer, follow these steps to update to the latest version of iTunes.
Mac
- Open the App Store on your Mac.
- Click Updates at the top of the window.
- If any macOS or iTunes updates are available, click Install.
Windows
- Open iTunes.
- From the menu bar at the top of the iTunes window, choose Help > Check for Updates.
- Follow the prompts to install the latest version.
If you are not prompted to install a new version of iTunes, you already have the latest version your operating system can support. Some features or devices might require a newer version of iTunes than your system supports.
And that’s it.
Once you have iTunes downloaded, the next thing you need to do is on your iPhone.
3rd step:
You are going to enable tethering (enabling tethering is a bit different for different iPhones)
so you go under:
“Settings”
Then select “General”
And then “Network”
& then go for “internet tethering”
Then enable “Internet tethering”
& for this demo you are just going to select “USB only”
You can tether via “Bluetooth connection” too if you like.
And that’s it.
You should be good to go the next thing you need to do, is just to connect your iPhone to your laptop.
And once you have your iPhone connected to your laptop, you might have to select iPhone from the list of available networks to your laptop.
And once you have it connected to your laptop, you know you are sharing your internet connection because, up at the top of your iPhone, it shows internet tethering.
Now you can surf the web where ever you have an internet connection with your iPhone.
Of course this is going to be pretty useful for any mobile real estate professional that need internet connection but might not be near hotspot.
Maybe you need access to send email or lock up some information on tax records or local MLS.
Actually it’s a pretty easy way to get to the internet especially if you have your laptop with you.
Other iPhones:
For instance, for iPhone 5 and iPhone SE there’s a slight difference:
(But for almost all iPhones the procedures are almost the same)
We go through 10 processes in iPhone 5 for tethering and they are as follows:
1: Connect the Apple iPhone 5 to the computer using the USB cable
Tethering lets you share the internet connection from your Apple iPhone 5 to the computer. Please note that you will be using data from your mobile service and charges may apply.
2: Touch settings
3: Touch cellular
4: Touch personal hotspot
5: Touch the slider to activate the personal hotspot
6: If you see this screen touch USB only
7: The Apple iPhone 5 is now tethered.
8: On the computer, wait for the device drivers to install and then click home network
9: wait while the computer automatically applies the settings and connects to the data network
10: Setup is complete. Click close.
